Getting “Back To School” Ready

The school year is soon upon us, and that means school supplies shopping and creating new routines for not just your kids, but the entire family. Extracurriculars, homework, and school events create a lot of activity in and out of the home, so being organized is a must! Here’s some tips for back to school shopping as well as how to set your kids up for success during the school year:

1. Create a Homework Space

Kids need a calm, clear space to do their homework, and that can mean a desk in their room or a quiet corner of the house.  I suggest storing supplies in a bin so that it can be put away when homework is complete. Here’s my favorite collection from The Container Store. I recommend using zipper bags to separate pencils, markers, and other supplies. If you like frequently-used supplies on their desk, try this desk organizer. It’s also convenient to keep paper and at-home workbooks/notebooks in a magazine holder so they’re found easily.

2. Create an Organized Entryway/Mudroom

It’s always a pain to keep your entryway/mudroom clear of clutter when kids are coming and going. One major tip to reduce clutter is keeping things off the floor with hooks on the wall and containing shoes in bins. Here’s my favorite woven basket. And this is my favorite wall-mounted coat rack- I use the 10-hook one in my house but it comes with 5-hook option as well.

3. Make a Shopping List

There’s a lot of shopping to do before and during the school year- new clothes, the mandatory supplies list, extracurricular uniforms/equipment, and even groceries for easy breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. I suggest keeping a list of what you need on your phone and update it as things pop up or are purchased. I recommend using a free app like OurGroceries because it can be shared across household members.
