5 Simple Steps to Organize & Reset Your Home This Fall

As the air turns crisp and the leaves begin to fall, the change in seasons is a perfect reminder to refresh and reset your home. Organizing for the changing season isn’t just about tidying up- it’s about creating a space that supports the joyful months ahead. Whether you’re preparing for the holidays or simply looking to embrace the seasonal shift, these five simple steps will help you transition into an organized, clutter-free fall.

1. Declutter Summer Seasonal Items

As the warmest season comes to an end, so do summer activities, such as swimming and summer camps. Now is a great time to go through all of the items involved in these activities and declutter! Think of all the items related to your summers- for example, if you and your family do outdoor swimming, go through all of your swimwear, towels, pool toys, and even pool memberships. Once you are left with what is staying, put these items in a labeled storage bin and store them in your garage, attic, or a dedicated closet. This will free up space for fall and winter essentials while keeping your home streamlined and clutter-free.

2. Rotate Your Wardrobe & Store Off-Season Clothing

Sweater weather is finally here! Now is the time to break out the fall and winter clothes and create a wardrobe rotation system that’s easy to implement every year. (Bonus tip: As you pack away summer items, take the opportunity to declutter- donate or sell anything you didn’t wear this season. This will make your wardrobe rotation faster and smoother for the next season.) We recommend storing off-season clothes high up in your closet in a basket or in an underbed storage bin. Don’t forget to label the container so that it’s easy to find when the weather starts warming up next year.

3. Create an Entryway Drop Zone

Fall often means busier schedules- whether it's back-to-school, work, or social events, and your entryway becomes a high-traffic area. Creating an organized drop zone that’s easy to use can help keep your family on track and prevent clutter from piling up by the door. Set up a designated space where everyone can drop keys, shoes, coats, and bags- depending on your lifestyle and home layout, this may be near the front door or garage door. Use wall-mounted hooks for jackets and hats, a shoe rack or stylish baskets for footwear, and a small table or shelf for everyday essentials like wallets and sunglasses. In Dallas Fort Worth, where the weather can be unpredictable, it’s also helpful to keep a spot for umbrellas and rain gear!

4. Set Up a Seasonal Cleaning Schedule

Fall is the ideal time to deep clean and refresh your home. While regular cleaning routines are essential, seasonal cleaning includes decluttering and tackling often-forgotten tasks that build up over time. Break your home into zones and create a schedule for cleaning one zone each week. This could include deep cleaning carpets, washing windows, dusting hard-to-reach spots, and cleaning out the refrigerator. By spacing out tasks, you’ll avoid feeling overwhelmed and maintain a clean, organized home throughout the season.

5. Organize & Put Out Your Seasonal Decor

One of the most fun things about fall is decorating your home to match the changing season and in preparation for upcoming holidays. What’s not to love about pumpkins, warm colors, and the smell of spices? While decorating for fall is fun, it’s easy for seasonal decor to create clutter and storage issues if not managed properly. The key is to be intentional about how you decorate and store items. Group similar decor items together in storage bins and label them clearly. Remember less can be more when it comes to decor. I personally love keeping it simple with natural decor like pine cones and pumpkins. Then I don't have to store anything!

Organizing your home for fall doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By decluttering summer items, rotating your wardrobe, setting up functional spaces like a drop zone, and staying on top of seasonal cleaning, you’ll create a cozy and inviting environment that sets you up to truly enjoy the season's blessings. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and need help, our team in Dallas Fort Worth is here to assist you.
